Motorcycle Safety Foundation Basic Rider Course
The Motorcycle Safety Foundation Basic Rider Course (BRC) approved by the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is designed to develop the novice motorcyclist the skills required to ride safely on the street. The 16-hour course (5 hrs of classroom and 11 hrs of range practice) includes basics of motorcycle operation, effective braking, turning skills, obstacle avoidance, and safe riding strategies.
Department of Transportation (DOT) approved helmets and 125cc to 500cc motorcycles are provided. Students must provide: eye glasses/sunglasses, full-fingered leather gloves, sturdy over-the-ankle leather shoes or boots, long sturdy pants, long sleeve shirt, or jacket and rain gear (if needed).

Completion of the Basic RiderCourse meets all DMV test requirements necessary to attain a motorcycle license. Successful participants will receive a license waiver certificate to add the M2 classification to their license and serves as a 30-day provisionary motorcycle classification for Virginia licensed drivers. Successful participants may also qualify for up to 10% motorcycle insurance
discount.
To be eligible to enroll, a student must have a valid driver’s license or learner’s permit. A motorcycle license or motorcycle learner’s permit is NOT required. This course is physically demanding, as such, students should be in good health. The instructor will make the final determination if the student will be allowed to participate in the course.
