Substance Abuse Counselor Assistant

The Substance Abuse Counselor Assistant Career Studies Certificate prepares students to work in local substance abuse organizations by providing essential knowledge and hands-on experience. The program includes courses in general education, counseling techniques, ethics, cultural diversity, group dynamics, case management, and a human services internship. This career studies certificate falls under the Associates of Applied Science in Human Services Program.

This program provides the curriculum and 100 hours of practical experience that meets the Virginia Board of Counseling educational requirement component for a Certified Substance Abuse Counselor Assistant. This program provides a pathway for students to explore careers in substance abuse agencies, mental health organizations, and rehabilitation facilities. Industry professionals can use the knowledge and experiences gained from this career certificate to enhance marketability, comply with state regulations, and continue studies in the Human Services Program.

Upon successful completion of the 28 course credit hours, students will have met the requirement to fulfill the Human Services Substance Abuse Career Studies Certificate.  The Virginia Board of Counseling has approved these courses as meeting their educational requirements for Substance Abuse Counseling Assistants. State certification as well as other components must be fulfilled, and the Board of Counseling will determine if students have met all requirements. Virginia Peninsula Community College does not grant certifications as Substance Abuse Counselor Assistants.
