Things to consider when transferring to a four-year college or university

  • Career Goals: What is your chosen career?
  • Degree Programs: Which colleges/universities offer that degree?
  • Matching Degrees: What degree at Virginia Peninsula Community College matches that degree?
  • Articulation Agreements: Is there an articulation agreement with your chosen school?
  • Course Planning: What courses need to be taken at Virginia Peninsula Community College and in what semester?
Steps to transfer to a four-year college
  1. Meet with an Academic Advisor: Schedule a meeting during your first semester to discuss transferable degree options.
  2. Review Transfer Information: Visit Transfer Virginia or the admissions website of your intended four-year college to obtain transfer-related information, including articulation agreements, guaranteed admission agreements, and co-enrollment agreements with Virginia Peninsula and Virginia’s Community College System (VCCS).
  3. Consult Transfer Guides: Review the transfer guide and college catalog for your chosen institution. Familiarize yourself with the minimum transfer GPA, credit hour requirements, transferable courses, application deadlines, and letter of intent requirements.
  4. Attend Open House/Transfer Days: Participate in Open House or Transfer Day events at the four-year institutions you are considering.
  5. Application Deadlines: Be aware of the application deadlines for the semester you plan to transfer.
  6. Complete Applications: Submit the application and any required forms (mid-term reports, instructor evaluations/recommendations, college official’s report, etc.) to the four-year institution by the appropriate deadline. Most colleges prefer online applications and require an application fee and official transcripts. Request your official Virginia Peninsula transcript — and note that some institutions also require high school transcripts and SAT/ACT scores.
