This Friday Thomas Nelson will observe Juneteenth, an annual celebration that commemorates June 19, 1865; the day the last enslaved Americans in Texas learned they were free, although the Emancipation Proclamation had been signed more than two years earlier.

Governor Ralph Northam announced Tuesday his intent to make Juneteenth a permanent, paid state holiday, and issued an executive order declaring this Friday a holiday. By closing, Thomas Nelson recognizes the great significance of this occasion and the important opportunity to celebrate Black history and culture, as we further educate and connect our community.

Juneteenth is the oldest known commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States. Juneteenth is part of this country's shared history and we should celebrate it together.

As our communities celebrate Juneteenth this week, take the opportunity to listen, share and engage in meaningful conversations that lead to growth and positive societal change.
