Thomas Nelson officials, in partnership with U.S. Census Bureau representatives, remind the College community Census 2020 is still open for responses. The census, which occurs every 10 years, aims to count every U.S. resident and impacts the ability to secure funding for many necessary programs in our communities and affects so much more.

In July, Census takers began interviewing at households that have not responded. In cases where no one was home at the time of a visit, census takers left a notice with information about how to respond online, by phone or by mail.

If you received this notice at your residence, or have not acted on the notice issued this spring, please take time to reply.

In subsequent weeks, the Census Bureau will announce additional census offices as it prepares to start enumeration activities nationwide. The majority of census offices across the nation will begin follow-up work on Aug.11, according to Bureau's website.

Here are the Census Bureau's responses to key concerns people have shared.

  • Does the 2020 Census ask about citizenship status? No, Census 2020 does not ask whether you or anyone in your home is a U.S. citizen.
  • Are non-citizens counted in the census? Yes, everyone counts. The census counts everyone living in the country, including non-citizens.
  • Can my answers be shared with law enforcement or used against me? No, the law prevents the Census Bureau from sharing your information with law enforcement. Your answers cannot be used to impact your eligibility for government benefits. Your answers are only used to create statistics about our country. The Census Bureau is bound by Title 13 of the U.S. Code to protect your personal information and keep it strictly confidential.
  • Can I only take the census online? No, Census 2020 will be available online, by phone, and by mail. Online and phone responses can be completed in 13 languages (English, Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, Russian, Arabic, Tagalog, Polish, French, Haitian Creole, Portuguese, and Japanese).
  • What questions WILL NOT be asked by the Census Bureau? During Census 2020, the Census Bureau will never ask you for your Social Security number, money or donations, anything on behalf of a political party or your bank or credit card account
