Campus Experts Present Chat on Safety

Panelists from throughout the College presented a discussion on practical tips for staying safe on campus, online and as a member of the Thomas Nelson community. The talk comes as September was National Campus Safety Awareness Month and October is National Cybersecurity Month.

Moderated by Donna Norman of Human Resources, the online presentation aimed to provide clarity on personal responsibility for safety at work, whether on campus or working remotely, and it explored ways to share in that responsibility for personal safety. The discussion also touched on existing safety measures at Thomas Nelson and challenged participants to consider new strategies for helping the College maintain a safe teaching and learning environment.

Panelists were Network Analyst David Harris, Thomas Nelson Police Chief Kelvin Maxwell and Dr. Jennifer Morey, assistant professor of Psychology. Since 2016, Harris has brouhgt his 30 years' experience in IT to the College serving as lead administrator for Microsoft 365. Maxwell, a Thomas Nelson graduate, became police chief in 2015 having joined the College as a sergeant in 2006. He also serves as Crisis Action Team leader, emergency coordinator officer and Cleary Act Compliance officer, among other roles. Morey has been a faculty member since 2016 and is the social science program chair.

Harris led the discussion on digital safety while Maxwell's presentation focused on physical safety and Morey provided insight on psychological safety during the hour-long chat. Additionally, Norman shared several documents via email last Wednesday containing links to the many resources panelists addressed.
