Thomas Nelson Educator Among Artists in Local Art Center's Final Show

Thomas Nelson's Janice Hathaway will be among featured artists in the Peninsula Fine Arts Center's final exhibition. The center closes in December after nearly six decades in Newport News showcasing local talent.

The show called "Masters of Surrealism: Picasso, Dalí and Miro" runs Nov. 21 through Dec. 20. It explores a movement in art and literature aimed at expressing imaginative dreams and visions free from conscious rational control.Several works by Hathaway will be among more than 60 pieces on display.

Having crafted photo collages based on her photography for many years, the veteran art professor developed a process she calls transmorgraphy. Her unique method of working with Photoshop results in convincing surrealist landscapes that she sees as "living moments as imaginary situations."

Hathaway, who exhibits routinely and has been featured internationally, began working as an established surrealist in the late 1970s when she became a founding member of the Alabama Surrealist group, Glass Veal. She is currently a member of the Alabama surrealist group, Fresh Dirt.

In addition to being an educator, published artist and photographer, she is graphic designer who began teaching graphic and media design at Thomas Nelson in 2008. The Williamsburg resident has a B.F.A. and an M.F.A. in printmaking and photography from the University of Alabama.
