Alert Students: Applications Open for Paid Summer Internships at NASA

Virginia community college sophomores can apply for paid research experiences through the Virginia Space Grant Consortium's STEM Takes Flight NASA Research Experience program. This opportunity provides real-world, hands-on learning experiences that expose students to various STEM career options at NASA.

The deadline to apply online at vsgc.odu.edu/STEMtakesFlight is Feb. 15.

The consortium and Virginia's Community Colleges, in partnership with Hampton's NASA Langley Research Center and NASA Goddard Space Flight Center's Wallops Flight Facility at Virginia's Eastern Shore, is offering up to 25 paid summer research experiences for STEM majors.

For 10 weeks in summer 2021, students will work with NASA research advisors on diverse projects for NASA Langley Research Center's Research and Engineering directorates and NASA Wallops Flight Facility. The experience will include projects such as wind tunnel experiments/data analysis, small satellite hardware development, unmanned aerial systems, environmental and water quality projects, and more.

Plus, students will receive a $5000 stipend.

In addition to having a miniumum 2.5 GPA, those eligible must be:

  • A US citizen
  • At least 18 years old
  • A Virginia community college student enrolled in at least six credit hours in spring 2021
  • A sophomore not graduating prior to May 2021
  • A STEM major (exclusive of applied health and business)

Also in collaboration with Virginia's universities, colleges and community colleges, VSGC offers the Commonwealth Stem Industry Internship Program (CSIIP). The program links undergraduate STEM students to industry, and employers to students.

One application puts a student in front of companies offering paid internships throughout Virginia. Plus, students, colleges, universities and companies can participate free of charge.

Eligibility:

  • U.S. citizen or permanent resident
  • 18 years old
  • 2.7 GPA or higher
  • STEM major
  • At least 6 credit hours per semester
  • New graduates are eligible to apply
