Thomas Nelson Awarded Grant of Nearly $1.7 Million
The United States Department of Labor is awarding Thomas Nelson nearly $1.7 million through the Strengthening Community College (SSC) training grants program. Thomas Nelson was one of 11 community colleges or community college systems across the country selected for a grant.
The SSC grants were announced Jan. 15 and are designed "to build the capacity of community colleges to meet labor market demand for a skilled workforce," according to a Department of Labor news release. The DOL was expecting to award anywhere from eight to 16 grants.
Funds cannot be used for construction costs, but, according to the DOL website, "minor alterations to adjust an existing space for grant activities (such as a classroom alteration) may be allowable, with prior approval." There also are no cost-sharing or matching funds requirements from the recipients.
The grants are a way for colleges to combat the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic in their communities.
"The Strengthening Community Colleges Training Grants will play an important role in helping workers to reskill as quickly as possible with industry-recognized credentials and accelerated pathways to degrees," Assistant Secretary for Employment and Training John Pallasch said in the release.
In applying for the grant, colleges were encouraged to form apprenticeships with local businesses, especially those businesses experiencing a shortage of skilled laborers.
Thomas Nelson was awarded $1,686,258. Other grant recipients are Los Angeles City College ($1,686,201); American River College ($5 million); Norwalk Community College ($3.4 million); Broward College ($1,689,143); Savannah Technical College ($4,850,244); Grand Rapids Community College ($5 million); Forsyth Technical Community College ($5 million); Research Foundation, City University of New York ($4.9 million); Northwest State Community College ($1,689,151); and Mount Hood Community College ($5 million).
