PELF Videoconference Featuring Local Radio Host, a Hit

Thomas Nelson Community College recently presented a videoconference of the quarterly Peninsula Executive Leadership Forum (PELF) in partnership with the Virginia Peninsula Chamber of Commerce. Barbara Hamm Lee, host of the WHRO's Another View, was the featured speaker during the May 4 event.

Hamm, who also owns a local media consulting firm called Sharing Info LLC, was introduced by Thomas Nelson President Towuanna Porter Brannon. During the introduction, Brannon touched on the complementary missions held by community colleges and chambers of commerce to enhance the local community's standard of living.

Lee discussed how she was unexpectedly thrust into a career change that resulted in her becoming an entrepreneur and successful media consultant while still working in broadcast media. She not only shared her advice on leadership, her expertise on diversity issues tied to current events made for a compelling presentation. A highlight was Hamm explaining her response to questions as to why African Americans would want to stay in the United States is always, "because we are Americans and we love this country!"

Among Hamm's best leadership tips was a reminder that "nobody can control time; we can only control our priorities."

PELF is a quarterly community leadership development and networking opportunity. This forum gives top-level executives from premier Peninsula businesses and leaders from throughout the Commonwealth an opportunity to share their insight on corporate strategy and what shapes their business decision-making today. The program aims is to foster dialogue that inspires and motivates excellence in business leadership.

The May 4 videoconference was sponsored by Dominion Power. The next program will be hosted by the Virginia Peninsula Chamber of Commerce on Aug. 24 and will feature Newport News Chief of Police Steve Drew. The College will host the fall program on Nov. 18 with Mike Vest, owner of the Peninsula's Lionsbridge Professional Soccer Team.
