President Among Panelists for Upcoming Women’s Leadership Forum
President Towuanna Porter Brannon will be among panelists for the Peninsula Chamber of Commerce's 2021 Women's Leadership Forum. The July 8 event is presented by the Miles Agency, a niche marketing and public relations firm based in Virginia Beach, and will take place at the Virginia Peninsula Chamber of Commerce in Hampton.
Focused on education, the forum is a panel discussion featuring local professionals from diverse work environments discussing their careers, leadership style and work-life balance management. The panel will also include Academies of Hampton Director Veronica Hurd of Hampton City Schools and Education Director Latitia McCane of Newport News Shipbuilding's Apprentice School. Also among guests is Michele Benson, gift planning officer for the Riverside Health Systems Foundation, serving as moderator.
Dr. Brannon, whose career in higher education spans 25 years, is Thomas Nelson Community College's ninth president. She joined the College in January having previously served as vice president for Student Services at North Carolina's Mitchell Community College. She has a bachelor's degree in human services, a master's degree in education from St. John's University and a doctoral degree in executive leadership, administration and policy from Fordham University.
Hurd, a second-year Ph.D. student in the education leadership, policy and justice concentration at Virginia Commonwealth University, holds undergraduate and graduate degrees from Christopher Newport University and Old Dominion University, respectively. She is a founding fellow with the National Career Academy Coalition and serves on its board of directors. Hurd is also Hampton City Schools' lead with the Ford Next Generation Learning network and a member of the network's Leadership Council.
Dr. McCane joined The Apprentice School in 2018. She previously served as dean of instructional services at Bishop State Community College in Mobile, Ala., where she held several leadership positions since 2007. She also served as associate dean of instruction at Jefferson Davis Community College in Brewton, Ala. McCane earned doctoral degrees in urban higher education administration and education administration from Jackson State University and Lacrosse University. She holds graduate and undergraduate degrees in organic chemistry and chemistry from the University of Alabama and Texas Southern University.
