Baseball team opens with tie, loss

The Gators baseball team traveled to North Carolina to open the season Jan. 29 against Chowan’s junior varsity, tying the first game 12-12, and losing the second 6-4. Both were seven-inning contests.

“We saw a lot of good things,” said Shane Harrison, in his first season as coach of the Gators. “Overall, we were very happy with how we played. We got to see what we need to work on in practice.”

He had separate lineups for each game, and used a new pitcher every inning so everyone played.

Standouts included pitcher Peyton Thomas (five strikeouts in two innings), catcher Joey Williams (three hits), and second baseman Daniel Horowitz.

“Joey hit the ball really well; really our whole team hit well,” Harrison said. "Daniel Horowitz was a big spark, played very well.”

The baseball team’s only games this week are Feb. 4 at home against William & Mary’s club team. The doubleheader starts at 11 a.m. at The Hanger, which is on La Salle Avenue.
