Tommy Thomas has put together an ambitious schedule for the fall 2024 women’s volleyball season at Virginia Peninsula Community College, his second leading the program.
Six home dates highlight the schedule, which consists of 23 matches. The Gators will participate in seven tri-matches, including two at home. They also will play in the NJCAA Region 10 Division III tournament.
“We’re playing a lot of different teams,” Thomas said.
Last year, in just the second year of the program, the Gators went 3-4 and finished third in the New South Athletic Conference tournament. The 2024 opponents include Richard Bland, which won the NJCAA Division II national title in 2022, Bryant & Stratton, Cheyney, and Southwest Virginia Community College for the first time.
“It’s definitely challenging,” Thomas said of the schedule. “We have some from (NJCAA) Division III and Division II schools, and a couple of Division Is of community colleges.”
At least three players (Mylo DeSue, Ashleigh Yost and Sydney Wallace) from last year’s team are returning and Thomas is recruiting five new players and counting. He’s hoping for a roster of 12-15.
“I think we definitely could go .500 just with the players that I have now,” he said. “There are a few we are recruiting right now that could definitely put us over .500.”
Those interested in playing volleyball in the fall can contact Thomas at hrjdirector@gmail.com or athletics director Chris Moore at MooreC@vpcc.edu. Also, there is a volleyball team meeting July 25 at 10 a.m. in the Hastings Hall annex. Players will be able to register for classes, learn about financial aid and do all the necessary paperwork to enroll in the College.
