Virginia Peninsula Community College welcomed Truist Bank officials to the Hampton Campus on Jan. 23 for the presentation of a $50,000 contribution and an informative discussion aimed at inspiring students to achieve financial success and other goals.

Thomas Ransom, president of Truist Bank’s Virginia region, accompanied by Truist executives, Michael Glover and Mark Johnson, presented the generous check to VPCC President Towuanna Porter Brannon and College officials. The funds will support career readiness initiatives to help students transition after completing their studies.

After the exchange, Ransom sat for an insightful discussion moderated by Tracy Ashley of VPCC’s Educational Foundation and immediate past director of Development. A motivational speaker financial literacy advocate, Ransom focused on leadership, purpose, and the importance of smart financial decisions.

Ashley opened the discussion, introducing Ransom. She noted his background from rural Virginia to becoming a thriving financial executive and highlighted his continued support of higher education through his role with Truist.

“We are very fortunate to have him here with us today to share his story and to impart the extensive knowledge of good leadership practices and financial literacy skills,” she said. “I'd also like to thank him and Truist for their financial support. They provided the funding to extend the College’s career readiness and financial literacy initiatives.”

Ransom reflected on his upbringing in Urbanna, Va., and his path to success as a first-generation college student. He emphasized the significance of hard work, education, and perseverance. He challenged the audience of about 15 students and several faculty and staff members to consider their purpose and move accordingly.

“Your journey starts with purpose,” Ransom said. “My purpose is simple: it’s to inspire and motivate people to reach their potential. You have the power to achieve what may seem impossible. I can tell you that believing in your purpose will carry you through challenges and lead you to success.”

He also shared valuable insights into financial literacy, offering practical advice on managing personal finances, building credit, and saving for the future. He stressed the importance of avoiding credit card and other debt, making informed decisions about spending, and taking advantage of retirement savings plans—especially employer matching contributions.

“Don’t live beyond your means,” Ransom cautioned. “Focus on investing in things that appreciate, not things that depreciate (particularly cars). Your financial future is built on decisions you make today. Start with small smart habits, like prioritizing savings, and you’ll be set for success.”

In the lively Q&A chat, Ransom also touched on career readiness, the role of internships, and the impact of networking. He said gaining work experience and forging connections in the professional world are key to long-term success.

“Work experience is critical. It teaches you how to perform in real-world environments and builds the trust of employers,” he noted. “Don’t be intimidated—take every opportunity to learn, grow and network. Every job, every internship is an opportunity to build your skills and find your path.”

In conclusion, he encouraged students to continue their studies and keep pushing forward, despite the challenges life may bring.

“When chaos strikes, you can either be a victim or a victor. Don’t shy away from adversity—embrace it and use it to fuel your growth.”

The $50,000 donation from Truist Bank will support the College’s career development efforts aimed at preparing students for the workforce.

“We are proud to partner with the College in supporting students’ futures,” said Ransom.
