Uniform Certificate of General Studies

The Uniform Certificate of General Studies (UCGS) is a one-year program that ensures all completed courses can be transferred and fulfill general education requirements at any public college or university in Virginia.

  • The UCGS includes seven course blocks, and students must complete a specific number of courses from each block.
  • Since the UCGS does not account for the specific requirements of different majors, students should carefully choose courses that align with their intended four-year degree program.
  • Our Academic Advisors can help students select the best UCGS courses for their future studies.

Students enter the UCGS program by meeting the usual general admission requirements established by the College. After entering, students must next take any recommended developmental courses. Finally, to earn the Certificate, students must complete approved college-level courses with a grade point average of at least 2.0 or better.

Educational or Occupational Objectives: As the objective of this Certificate is to document the completion of a core of general education courses, this Certificate does not lead to a specific job or career. However, it helps affirm to potential employers that a student has a solid, valuable foundation in the skills of basic math as well as in spoken and written English.

Note: State Council policy requires that UCGS and Passport courses must be completed with a grade of C or higher.
