Test your knowledge of Black history trivia by completing this online quiz. Questions focus on the accomplishments of African Americans in the arts. Quizzes with correct answers will be entered in a drawing for the chance to win a $250 scholarship to be applied toward tuition and educational expenses.

A Sound Mind: Exploring the Impact of Music on Mental Health

Music has been a cornerstone of Black culture, serving as a powerful form of expression, resistance, and resilience. From spirituals to jazz, blues, gospel, hip-hop and beyond, music has provided a platform for Black voices to be heard and understood. A Sound Mind explores the transformative power of music and its effect on the human mind, emotions, and overall mental well-being. This program offers insights and strategies for accessing the therapeutic potential of music.

Painting History

Gators Café, Griffin Hall, Hampton

Experience the live painting and presentation of a historic element in Black history created on site by renowned artist ChaVonne Whisonant. ChaVonne has provided live art at local festivals, painted a mermaid for the City of Norfolk and painted several murals throughout the Tidewater area. She will display canvas paintings and share her own little corner of this great big world.

Soul Line Dancing Class

Soul Line Dancing derives from the tradition of group dance instruction linked to the past when African Americans were enslaved, and spirituals were used to help find the Underground Railroad. In modern times, this dance form has gained immense popularity nationwide and throughout the Virginia Peninsula. Join our free classes.
