Charles and Mary Hastings were long-time residents of the Peninsula. Charles was a graduate of Johns Hopkins University and Mary a graduate of the College of William and Mary. In 1944 they founded the Hastings Instrument Company, a company in Hampton known today as Teledyne Hastings Instruments.
On the Hampton campus of Virginia Peninsula, Hastings Drive and Hastings Hall are named in their honor, in recognition of the help they gave to the founding of this college in the 1960s.
