The Associate of Science in Science at Virginia Peninsula Community College is designed for individuals interested in gaining knowledge and skills to be successful in an entry-level technical science field or to transfer to a four-year institution to complete a bachelor’s degree in a science-related field. The main focus is on training students to think scientifically and preparing them to conduct independent research at the bachelor’s degree level. During this two-year program, full-time students are required to complete two 2-semester science laboratory courses as well as additional courses of their choice to explore further optional science, mathematics or computer science courses. The program culminates with a required independent, guided research course, which allows students to work one-on-one with professors and design a research project on the topic of their choice.

Virginia Peninsula’s Associate of Science in Science program offers a specialization in education this is designed for students who are exploring education as a career. The program covers general education courses and an introduction to the teaching profession while preparing students to transfer to a four-year institution. The curriculum is specifically designed to develop skills in critical thinking, self-expression, communication, decision making and problem solving to meet the diverse educational needs of schools in Hampton Roads.
Possibilities
Students may qualify for one of several internship opportunities offered by The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the Virginia Institute of Marine Sciences (VIMS), the Department of Energy (DOE) or other private or government agencies.
