I’m excited to be able to gain exposure to experienced professionals in the field.
Justin Javier is a NASA and Virginia Space Grant Consortium (VSGC) scholar. The Electrical Engineering student received $5,000 from the STEM Takes Flight in the Community College Scholarship as well as a $5,000 stipend for his participation in a 10-week NASA research summer program. "I [am] interested in aviation and space and NASA [is] looking to give encouragement and financial support to students that [want] a career in that field," Javier said.
Presented by the VSGC, the STEM Takes Flight in the Community College Scholarship gives Javier access to a mentorship program that includes meetings with VSGC staff, university faculty and other STEM students. The program was developed to enhance retention in community college STEM programs. It also creates a pipeline for STEM students to move from community college to their educational or career goals. "I'm excited to be able to gain exposure to experienced professionals in the field," Javier said.
